My First Watercolor - It really is. And of course I used the wrong paper - card stock because I didn't have any watercolor paper. I used a brush shaped like a fan and very dry. I did the grasses with art markers. I liked it better before I added the large tan stalks. But since the paper is kind of warped anyway I'm going to redo it. This time on either watercolor paper or bristol board. I don't really like the way wc paper absorbs the ink. Anyway, it's my first one and I kind of like it.

Anyone suggest a watercolor set for a beginner?

Janey -- I like your use of color! You WILL be happier when you try watercolor on the right paper, though! ;-) What kind of set you get depends on how much $ you want to spend -- and you won't want to forget to budget in paper and brushes. You may find that you really don't want to buy a "set" at all, and would rather get individual tubes of paint. Don't waste your time on terribly cheap anything -- you'll just be disappointed and feel bad about what you do. Better to start slow with good stuff and then build. Do you have my e-mail address? Write if you'd like -- I can talk about shopping and art supplies and (especially) shopping FOR art supplies all day long!

I like the half pans better than the tubes. They are cheaper than the tubes and easier for me to work with. BUT, if you don't have a lot of money to spend, you would be better served to buy good brushes and cheaper paint. (Any brush that comes with a paint set should be thrown out immediately because it WILL be an awful brush.)

It looks like you are painting from real life, is this part of the landscape of Forida ? If so, it's a beautiful sight to see. You can drop Kev a line at K's Diseased Wits, he can hook you up when it comes to watercolor. Don't forget, this week is 'Crowded' on illustration friday. Hope to see ya there !

I live 15 mins from the beach. Since I did it last night it's more from real memory then real life. It's impossible to say there's nothing to draw when you live here. I'll check diseased wits out. Tomorrow's a art store day! And I'm working on crowded.
